You Have the Power
Music has played such a consistent and diverse role in my life over the years … the same song can reduce me to tears when I am sad, soothe me when I am stressed or get me dancing when I am happy. What I love about music (especially the lyrics) is that it has an uncanny ability to speak for us when our own words fail.
Recently, I took a musical trip down memory lane and stumbled across a song that was popular when I was 14 years old: The Sign – Ace of Base. One particular line really spoke to me: “No one’s gonna drag you up to get into the light where you belong.”
This got me thinking about internal and external locus of control as coined by psychologist Julian Rotter in 1954.
When we operate from an internal locus of control, we believe that we are in control of our own lives and outcomes. Operating from an external locus of control, we believe that external factors control our lives and outcomes. These factors could be other people or certain circumstances as well as luck or fate.
“No one’s gonna drag you up to get into the light where you belong” really emphasises the importance of an internal locus of control.
So what am I saying?
Be brave and speak up during that meeting you always shrink in because you think your ideas aren’t good enough.
Confront the uncomfortable in your relationships to take them to the next level.
Take an honest look at your health and identify ways that you can influence the effects of the genetic cards you may have been dealt.
And remember … it’s YOU who has the power to get you up into that light where you belong!
